Days were cooler than average for most of the State away from East Gippsland and parts of the coast, while night-time temperatures were generally close to average.
Wetter than average
- Autumn was wetter than average for most of Victoria, with some parts of the North, Northeast, Northcentral and Central districts much wetter than average
- It was drier than average only in parts of East Gippsland
- Statewide, rainfall was around 27% above the long-term autumn average of 157 mm, the highest since 1989
- The season began with the slightly wetter than average March, followed by a much wetter than average April; May brought useful rains but overall it was drier than average
- Whitlands (in the northeast of the State) had the highest daily rainfall this autumn, 159.2 mm on 30 April; it was also the wettest place in Victoria, recording 694.7 mm this season
- Many sites, some of which have more than 100 years of data, had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record
- Some sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record, and many sites had their highest total autumn rainfall for at least two decades
Cool days
- Days were cooler than average for most of the State away from East Gippsland and parts of the coast, and much cooler than average in some areas in the Northern and Northeastern districts
- The mean daytime temperature for Victoria over autumn was 0.78 °C below average, the coolest since 2011
- Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record, or their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years
- There were many cold nights, especially in March and May, but the mean minimum temperature for autumn was generally close to average
- Victoria's lowest daily minimum temperature this autumn was -5.9 °C, recorded at Mount Hotham on 10 May
- Morwell, and Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse had their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature since at least 1998
Snow, strong winds and tornado
- A strong cold front which crossed Victoria on 3 April brought a sharp decrease in temperatures to the State, and snow to Victorian Alps; more snow fell in the Alpine area at the end of April and in first several days of May, in the wake of the vigorous cold front which brought very low temperatures
- On 1 and 2 May, a deep low pressure system centred near Tasmania and a high pressure system to the west, created a strong pressure gradients at the surface and strong winds, with gusts exceeding 80 km/h over southern parts of Victoria; the strongest wind gust in the State during autumn was 137 km/h recorded at Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse on 2 May
- A strong cold front brought the band of thunderstorms and strong winds to southcentral Victoria in early hours of 20 May; thunderstorms produced a tornado with winds estimated to be over 150 km/h; the hardest hit areas were west of Geelong where more than 100 houses were severely damaged.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 June 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
