  • 4th highest mean minimum temperature for WA
  • 6th highest mean maximum temperature for WA

Rainfall

Autumn 2010 rainfall totals in WA were below to very much below average in the Pilbara, and substantial parts of the Gascoyne and Southwest Land Division (SWLD). Walpole in the Southwest, and Learmonth and Onslow in the west Pilbara recorded their driest autumns on record. Whilst in the southeast Kimberley, eastern Interior, Eucla and Southeast Coastal, sites recorded above to very much above average rainfall for autumn. Averaged across the state, the rainfall for autumn 2010 was near average (see autumn rainfall totals & decile map).

As a result of separate severe thunderstorms in March and May, Avondale Farm in the southwest Central Wheat Belt, and Newdegate Research Station in the southeast Great Southern recorded their highest autumn daily rainfall on record in autumn 2010.

Some sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn rainfall on record.

Maximum temperature

With the exception of an area in the far east Kimberley and northeast Interior, above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures were recorded across most of WA in autumn 2010, with areas of up to 3 °C above normal in the inland Pilbara and neighbouring districts. (see autumn maximum temperature decile map & anomaly map). When averaged over the whole state, autumn 2010 registered the 6th highest autumn mean maximum temperature on record since records began in 1950.

Learmonth Airport in the west Pilbara recorded its hottest autumn in terms of mean maximum temperature in 35 years of record, whilst Goomalling in the Central Wheat Belt recorded its hottest autumn day in 31 years of record with 43.0 °C on the 1st of March.

Some sites had their highest autumn temperature on record. Some sites had their highest autumn mean maximum temperature on record.

Minimum temperature

Above to very much above average mean minimum temperatures were recorded in much of WA in autumn 2010, although west coast regions were mostly close to average. Pockets of up to 3 °C above normal mean minima occurred in the eastern Pilbara, Kimberley, Interior and Eucla (see autumn minimum temperature decile map & anomaly map). When averaged over the whole state, autumn 2010 registered the 4th highest mean minimum temperature on record since records began in 1950.

Several sites in the SWLD, as well as Broome in the Kimberley, recorded their highest autumn daily minimum temperature in 2010, and Troughton Island in the far north Kimberley recorded its highest autumn mean minimum temperature in 30 years of observation.

Some sites had their highest autumn minimum temperature on record. Some sites had their highest autumn mean minimum temperature on record.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 June 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
