back to House Design Hot dry summer with mild winter

Where is it?

It covers most of inland northern Australia. Longreach is an example.

What's it like?

In this climate, summers are hot. Rainfall is light, falling mostly in summer, but there can be rare heavy downpours.. Winter days may be warm, but the winter nights can be cool. The air is dry, there is little cloud and sunshine is intense; glare is a problem. There is a big temperature difference between day and night.

House design aim:

Avoiding over-heating in summer: protection from the sun, moderation of the big daily temperature swing. Press here for design tips for indoor comfort in this climate.

Suitable building block:

Look for shade - existing trees, or over-shadowing from a nearby building.
