icon Warm humid summer, mild winter

Where is it?

In Australia, this climate type is found along the east coast, north of northern NSW (see map.) Brisbane is an example.

Description:

This climate is a more comfortable version of the hot humid climate. Summers in this zone are warm and humid; in most parts of the zone, summer will be rainy. Winters are mild, with less rain, and sunny. Coastal areas may be subject to decaying tropical cyclones. The summer climate is rather stressful, because of the high humidity. The body's natural cooling system (the evaporation of perspiration) does not work well, because the air already holds so much water vapour that it cannot hold much more. North of the tropic of Capricorn, the sun will be in the southern sky during summer.

House design aim:

It's important to minimise building heat gain and to maximise through ventilation. Some winter passive heating is necessary in the southern parts of the zone. Click here for design tips for the warm, humid climate.

Suitable building block:

Access to summer breezes is important. . Check our wind-roses - what is the usual direction of the summer breeze in your area? Landscaping can channel cooling breezes and provide summer shade. Solar access is desirable in winter. Check our cyclone information to see if they are likely in your district.
