Optimum design details - variations across
the temperate (warm summer, cool winter) zone
|
Even though Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide are all in the temperate climate
zone, optimum design details can be fine-tuned to allow for climate differences
between the three cities.
- In Melbourne, where there is not a lot of winter sun, north-facing
glazing should be from 25 to 40% of the floor area. Windows in Sydney
should be from 20 to 30% of floor area. The higher glazing values are
for houses of heavier construction.
- Evaporative cooling works well in Melbourne and Adelaide, but not
in Sydney, because of the greater summer humidity there.
- More ceiling insulation is needed
in Melbourne than in Adelaide, and Adelaide needs more than Sydney.
If refrigerative air-conditioning is to be used, then even thicker ceiling
insulation is recommended. In the cooler parts of the temperate zone
(including Melbourne) it is worthwhile insulating timber floors.
