Climate Data and Further Information

Most historical climate data held by the Bureau of Meteorology are not accessible through this web site, but can be obtained by contacting either the regional Climate Sections or our National Climate Centre. Some data are available via subscription to the SILO website. A list of free data sources is provided below.

We have prepared a list of stations which measure each element (eg. stations which measure air temperature) to help with determining what climate data are available for your area of interest. To assist us in responding to your data requests please provide this information. If you require data for a large number of sites you may wish to investigate the standard Climate Products which have been produced for a variety of users and include CD ROMs, maps, atlases and climatic summaries.

Please note - there is generally a charge associated with providing climate data apart from that available freely on the Bureau's pages, and Copyright law applies.

• Daily Weather Analysis and Satellite Product Archives
• Cyclone Data. The dataset contains details at (generally) six hourly intervals of cyclone position, pressure, wind speed and other information. The data are available in a flat text file: cyclones_newformat.zip where the current naming convention is used. Notes explaining the format are included with the compressed data file, which is approximately 350 kbyte in size. The current update includes some processed data from the 2005-2006 Australian cyclone season.
  * Note that a number of corrections/amendments were made to the database between 1999 and 2000, however the process of quality checking is still incomplete.
