Climate Data Available From The Bureau

The information on this page is intended to help determine what historical, quality controlled climate data are available from the Bureau of Meteorology. These data are in addition to those available on this web site.

There are many climate elements (air temperature for example) that can be recorded at a station operated by the Bureau of Meteorology. The majority of stations do not measure every one of these elements and availability of data for one element might not be the same as for other elements (for example rainfall may have been measured over more years than maximum and minimum air temperature). Also, the majority of stations do not have a complete unbroken record for any given element. Missing observations may be caused by a faulty instrument or sick observer for example.

The menu below provides broad information on the availability of daily and three-hourly observations from each Bureau site for several of the more popular weather elements. In the case of three-hourly data many stations will make less than the eight possible observations per day. As an example, a station may only make observations at 9am and 3pm. For some stations the climate data archive may have additional monthly mean values of daily observations, and possibly observations made more frequently than once every three hours, which are not included in the information provided here.

Before searching the station data holdings it is useful to understand the Bureau District and Station Numbering System. A Map of Australian Rainfall Districts (pdf, 450kbyte) is available for download (or from the Bureau) to assist with the selection of stations. More detailed notes about the listings on this page are also available. Once you have found that the data required exists, or for more information, contact the Bureau of Meteorology. There is generally a charge associated with the cost of providing the requested data.

A text file list of all stations (approx. 500 kbyte ZIP compressed) provides basic metadata such as station position, opening and closing dates, aviation and WMO numbers (if applicable), as well as other useful information. Also available is a site list of maximum temperature stations (csv text, 8 kbyte) with relatively long records - records totalling more than the equivalent of 50 full years of observations with greater than 80% overall completeness.
