The median is the middle ranked value against the historical record. For example, if 100 years of rainfall records at a given location were arranged in ascending order from lowest to highest, then the middle value in this ranking is called the median.

Percentiles are used to give an observed value a ranking against the historical record. For example, if 100 years of maximum temperature records at a given location were arranged in ascending order from lowest to highest, then the 10th, 50th and 90th values (in ascending order) would correspond with the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles respectively.
