MAJOR FLOOD WARNING FOR THE TWEED RIVER
Issued at 3pm EST on Saturday afternoon
Flood Warning Number: 2
An average of 50 millimetres of rain has fallen during the past 6 hours to 3pm today. Some flash flooding has been reported in the upper Tweed Valley at Chillingham.
Further heavy rain in the order of 300 to 400 millimetres is expected over the next 24 to 36 hours.
Strong winds from Tropical Cyclone Jonica combined with king tides are expected to produce storm surges that will worsen the flooding in the lower tidal reaches of the Tweed River at Tumbulgun and downstream.
At this stage it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of uncertainty over how much more rain will fall.
Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Murwillumbah - based on forecast rain reach major flood level (4.8 metres) during Saturday night
- further rises possible with heavier than forecast rain
Chinderah - expecting some coastal inundation above the highest tide of the year
