Summary
Tropical cyclone Kerry was named by the Fiji Meteorological Service on 5 January 2005 and reached category 3 late on 7 January. Kerry was downgraded to category 2 during the afternoon of 11 January and then to category 1 during the afternoon of 12 January. Early on 13 January the system was downgraded to a tropical low.
Kerry was initially steered towards the Queensland coast under the influence of a deep layered ridge to its south. A trough system passing to its south weakened this ridge and turned Kerry in a southerly direction.
There was an impact from long period swell waves along the southern Queensland and New South Wales coasts. There were many rescues on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and one surfer drowned.
