A biodiversity profiling project will explore whether natural history collections can be used to derive metrics of inferred change in biodiversity status across Australia. It will be enabled by the efforts of the Atlas of Living Australia and spatial modelling developed by CSIRO.
By learning from the implementation of the Atlas of Living Australia, the project will examine and report on how enablers, such as data licensing, information technology requirements and standards, could be used to develop an operational biodiversity monitoring system for Australia.
Key to the project is putting potential approaches in the context of Australian Government policy requirements. This will allow the National Plan for Environmental Information to improve its understanding of specific biodiversity-related policy and decision making requirements.
