Decommissioning of the National Environmental Information Infrastructure service

Thank you for your interest in, and support of, the National Environmental Information Infrastructure (NEII) service.

The Bureau of Meteorology decommissioned NEII on 15 June 2022. This decision was made to enable the Bureau to focus its efforts on services relating to weather, climate, water and oceans.

NEII customers will continue to have access to the environmental information they require through the following services:

  • Metadata catalogue entries will continue to be available through data.gov.au
  • Web data services will remain available from the data custodian
  • Monitoring sites information will remain available from the data custodian
  • The Environmental Vocabulary Service entries will continue to be available through Research Vocabularies Australia
  • Data viewer web services are viewable through NationalMap.

NEII metadata catalogue

All metadata catalogue entries are available through data.gov.au. NEII tags, links and references will be removed from catalogue entries.

Bureau of Meteorology datasets are additionally discoverable through the Bureau Data Catalogue.

Environmental Vocabulary Service

NEII vocabulary entries will continue to be available through the ARDC's Research Vocabularies Australia service. NEII-specific entries will be removed and other references to NEII updated.

Data viewer

Where possible, map layers will be added to NationalMap. Please note that there will be minor variations in how data are classified and visualised between NationalMap and NEII.

The following table describes alternate access arrangements for NEII web data services and data viewer entries.
