After-dinner speaker: Ian Allison

Ian Allison

Ian Allison has studied ice and climate in Antarctica for over 40 years. He has participated in or led 25 research expeditions to the Antarctic and published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers on Antarctic science. His research interests include ice shelf ocean interaction, Antarctic weather and climate, sea ice, and the mass budget of the Antarctic ice sheet.

Ian recently retired as the leader of the Ice Ocean Atmosphere and Climate program at the Australian Antarctic Division but continues as an Honorary Fellow within the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre in Hobart.

He has been actively involved for many years in international collaboration in Antarctic science through bodies such as the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research and the World Climate Research Programme. Most recently he was co-Chair of the ICSU/WMO Joint Committee for the International Polar Year 2007-2008, a lead author of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, and he is currently the President of the International Association of Cryospheric Science and a lead author of the IPCC fifth report.
