IDV10300 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Victoria Notes on the Weather for Victoria Issued at 1630 on Tuesday the 9th of February 2010 Recent Events Isolated shower and thunderstorm activity in the northeast and east of the State yesterday afternoon resulted in generally light falls in the 24 hours to 9am this morning of between 1 and 5mm. There were however some isolated heavier totals, with the highest recording being 15mm at Rocky Point, 12mm at Hunters Hill and 11mm at Carboor Upper. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developed across all districts in the 6 hours to 3pm except the Mallee. The showers and storms were more widespread about the ranges and resulted in falls generally less than 5mm. There were some isolated higher totals recorded in the 6 hours to 3pm, with 21mm falling at Darraweit Gum and 9mm at Wallaby Creek, both in the Central district. Minimum temperatures over Victoria were generally 4 to 8 degrees above the February average, except for the Western and Central Districts where they were 2 to 4 degrees above average. Temperatures generally ranged from the low teens in the Central district and West and South Gippsland to the mid twenties in the Mallee. The lowest temperature recorded was 12 degrees at Pound Creek in Gippsland, whilst the highest overnight minimum was 24 degrees at both Mildura and Ouyen. Morning fog and low cloud patches across southern areas of the State mostly cleared during the morning except along the Otway and far east coasts where they persisted late into the afternoon. Partly cloudy conditions developed over all of the State during the afternoon in association with a low pressure trough over western Victoria. Winds across the State were generally light northerly, however seabreezes developed along the coast during the afternoon. A gust to 139 km/hr [75 knots] was recorded at Hamilton in the Western District during a thunderstorm this afternoon. Maximum temperatures to 3pm were generally 6 to 8 degrees above average across most of the State except in the Mallee and Northeast districts where temperatures were only 2 to 4 degrees above the February mean. Maxima ranged between the high 30s in the west of the State to the high teens in the Alps. The highest reported temperature were 38 degrees at Edenhope, Kanagulk and Longerenong. In contrast the lowest temperature reported was 19 degrees at Falls Creek. In Melbourne, the temperature ranged from an overnight minimum of 19.3 degrees at 5.54am to a maximum of 32. 1 degrees at 11.13am. No rainfall was recorded in the city gauge in the 30 hours to 3pm, however thunderstorms were observed in the northern, eastern and western outskirts of the city during the afternoon. Explanatory Notes A slow-moving high pressure system is over the Tasman Sea. A weak low pressure trough over Victoria will remain slow-moving before deepening over western Victoria on Thursday and moving eastwards later on Thursday and early Friday. A high pressure ridge will lie to the south of Tasmania on Saturday while a low pressure trough will linger near northeastern Victoria.
