Newspaper weather presentations

Typical weather page from The Australian'Home' forecasters have an invaluable source of information in newspaper weather pages. Most Australian daily newspapers have enhanced and enlarged their weather pages with unprecedented amounts of data, and colourful graphics. These combine refinements of traditional information such as the weather map, with new data and graphics products from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Many of the transformations were in collaboration with the Bureau's graphics specialists, who provide tailored maps and data to the majority of Australian capital city dailies.

A typical weather page from The Australian, reproduced here, devotes much space to national coverage. It includes four-day forecasts, three days of weather maps, rainfall probabilities, a satellite image, maximum temperatures, UV forecasts, weather records, plus world weather. It also offers non-meteorological data-- tide and sunrise/sunset times, and astronomical information.

Papers in the State Capitals and major cities focus on regional data, for instance detailed rainfall information and seasonal forecasts. There are special presentations for recurring events such as drought, flood and tropical cyclones.

Some papers feature radar imagery and weather education segments.

(below) This page segment is an example of informative regional weather reporting from the Canberra Times.
