Tropical cyclone John

The weather map sequence at the bottom of the page shows the development and movement of tropical cyclone John between 11-16 December 1999.

John formed near Timor and moved southsouthwest towards the Pilbara coast. It crossed between Port Hedland and Karratha at 8.30am local time on 15 December, and dissipated quickly over the next day or two. Maximun wind gusts reached 210km/h.

Until about 12 hours before landfall, John was moving directly towards Karratha and Dampier. Had it not turned southeast, damage to those cities and to Roeburne and Wickham would have been far worse.

After reviewing the maps, we have provided a plotting task, then related questions.
