Papandayan, Java, Indonesia, 15 November 2002

Imagery of Papandayan eruption

Comments: This moderate sized eruption was observed only from the ground and geostationary imagery; higher resolution polar orbiting satellites were not passing over the area at the time. The eruption cloud is arrowed. Comparison with winds, infrared temperatures, and shadows of nearby clouds (frame b, hollow arrow) suggest a height of about 6 km above mean sea level.
