Dukono, Halmahera, northeastern Indonesia
Comments: Dukono lies in a very remote area, with little infrastructure, occasional social unrest, and considerable challenges in ground-based monitoring. Satellite monitoring is therefore one of the most frequent sources of information, although cloud is almost always a problem. The image above is typical of the strong activity observed during 2003; the ash in this enhancement shows as a brownish haze extending towards Irian Jaya. The image below is from 1994 and is also a very typical Dukono image; the plume can be seen fanning out to the northeast of the volcano, but is difficult to identify beyond 70 km.
