Egon, Flores, eastern Indonesia
Comments: Egon lies near the centre of Flores, a long, wasp waisted island NW of Timor. Flores has ten active volcanoes. There were several eruptions for Egon during September 2004, of which this was the best captured on satellite because of the clear conditions and the co-incident pass of the Aqua satellite. This cloud reached 4-5 km above sea-level, and drifted north, south and east in very light winds. The largest eruption in the sequence was on 9 September 2004, when an eruption cloud reached 5000 metres above the summit, or 6700 metres above sea-level. During the event, 1880 people were evacuated. Eruption gallery - click on a volcano
