Lopevi, Vanuatu

Animation of Lopevi

Comments: A good example of detection of volcanic ash by the 'split-window' or reverse absorption algorithm. The ash cloud was reported to above 25 000 ft (7.5 km), in the middle levels of the troposphere. On the visible imagery the ash is a light grey in colour and difficult to see, but the enhanced infrared images show it clearly.
