Manam, Papua New Guinea, 27 February 2006(Related pages: Rabaul & Manam, June1997, Manam, October 1998, Manam, July 1999, Manam, October 2002, Manam, Oct-Dec 2004, Manam, January 2005 ) Like the January 2005 eruption, the paroxysmal eruption of 27 February 2006 occurred at night. The eruption cloud was not as large as the 2005 eruption, but still displayed an obvious warm spot in the umbrella cloud, indicating stratospheric penetration to an altitude of ~19 km.
Image Source: MTSAT, 27 February 2006, 11:33 UTC. 11-12 micron image. Comments: The above 'reverse absorption' image shows an effect frequently observed for Manam eruptions - the white halo indicates a much stronger 'ice' signature than the surrounding cumulonimbus tops. The reason for this is that the particles in the eruption cloud are ice/ash aggregates and tend to be smaller than normal ice crystals in the thunderstorm clouds - the smaller particles give a more positive remote sensing signature. In this case, the cloud could be uniquely tracked using this signature for about 12 hours after the eruption.

Comments: The image above compares the detected sulphur dioxide at 16UTC on 27 February with the forecast cloud dispersion at the time (solid outline). Eruption gallery - click on a volcano
