These provisional data are not quality controlled - they may contain
errors - and are provided for the convenience of Cape Grim staff and
researchers. At present they are updated on the hour.
Baseline: if air flowing over Cape Grim has not recently crossed land
or, in particular, any local pollution sources, it is considered to be
representative of clean, mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere air.
Measurements made in these circumstances provide a baseline of
clean air conditions in our region of the Southern Hemisphere. At
Cape Grim conditions are said to be baseline when air is flowing from
the south-west between 190° and 280° (clockwise from north), and
is very clear, determined by a condensation nuclei count below 600
particles per cubic centimetre.
