The Bureau made good progress in its planned implementation of the National Research Priorities, with all key objectives being met and with a substantial contribution to the priority goal of 'Responding to climate change and variability'. In order to underpin national policy- making related to both climate change and climate variability, BMRC and the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) developed an initiative to couple a global climate model with a global economic model and are seeking sponsors for the activity.

Research in the Bureau also contributes to other priority goals. For example, a collaborative initiative with the Murray Darling Basin Commission, the CSIRO and other government agencies is being developed to help improve the national capability to understand and predict water availability in the Murray Darling Basin. This project would be a significant contribution to the goal of 'Water a critical resource'.

The activity on the RNDSUP to modernise the Bureau's radar network and to enhance associated severe weather warning services contributes to the priority goal of 'Frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industry' by increasing the national expertise in computing and information technology areas.
