Australian Government - Bureau of Meteorology

Senator the Hon Ian Campbell
Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Parliament House
CANBERRA ACT 2600

Dear Minister

In accordance with Section 70 of the Public Service Act 1999, I present the Annual Report of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology for 2004-05.

Also, in accordance with the Commonwealth Fraud Control Guidelines, I certify that the Bureau has prepared a fraud risk assessment and fraud control plan, and has in place, to meet its needs, appropriate fraud prevention, detection and investigation procedures.

This report represents the activities, achievements and performance of the Bureau for the 2004-05 financial year. This year has been my second as Director of Meteorology. It has been a year with many challenges and significant change and during which the Bureau:

  • moved its Head Office and Victorian Regional Office into new premises in Melbourne's Docklands;
  • continued the upgrade of the weather radar network, installing the first Doppler radar in Adelaide;
  • continued to experience near exponential growth in the use of its internet accessed services; and
  • was involved in international efforts to improve tsunami warning services in the region.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the valuable input the Bureau received over the past year from the new Parliamentary Secretary, Mr Greg Hunt, to whom you have given Ministerial responsibility for the Bureau of Meteorology, and from his predecessor, Dr Sharman Stone.

In addition, Bureau of Meteorology staff must be commended for their dedicated efforts throughout 2004-05, through which they continue to provide Australia with a broad range of world class, public good, meteorological and related services and products.

Yours Sincerely

Geoff Love

(Geoff Love)
Director of Meteorology
