Chapter 6 Australian Participation in GCOS/GOOS/GTOS

International Status of GCOS, GOOS and GTOS

At an international level, initial GCOS, GOOS and GTOS planning was largely independent, however the overlapping concerns of the three systems and the growing recognition of the benefits of a joint approach have resulted in a number of joint planning groups and meetings. While the three ‘systems’ are often seen as complimentary, there is an important distinction between them, in that while GOOS and GTOS are specific to the ocean and terrestrial domains respectively, GCOS addresses the climate system as a whole and incorporates atmospheric, oceanographic and terrestrial components.
