Chapter 7 Australian Participation in the IPCCC

Australian Input to IPCCC Assessments > Special Report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere

The Special Report on Aviation and the Global Atmosphere was finalised at a joint session of Working Groups I and III in Costa Rica in April 1999. The report examines the impact of aircraft emissions of gases and aerosols on both climate and the ozone layer, both now and, on the basis of a range of scenarios of aviation industry growth and technological development etc, out to 2050. The report was prepared at the request of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and is the first assessment assessment carried out by the IPCC for a specific industrial subsector. There was strong industry representation amongst the report’s lead authors and contributors and this was the first IPCC report to employ the Review Editor concept.

Australian scientists contributed to several chapters as follows:

  • Impacts of Aircraft Emissions on Atmospheric Ozone: K R Ryan (contributor);
  • Modelling the Chemical Composition of the Future Atmosphere: P Vohralik (contributor); and
  • Solar Ultraviolet Irradiance at the Ground: K R Ryan (Coordinating Lead Author), I C Plumb (Contributor).
