Chapter 7 Australian Participation in the IPCCC

Australian Input to IPCCC Assessments > Special Reports on Emissions Scenarios

The Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) was finalised at the fifth session of Working Group III in Kathmandu in March 2000. The report was prepared at the request of the Panel of the IPCC, in response to an evaluation of the earlier IPCC IS92 emissions scenarios. The SRES scenarios cover a wide range of the main driving forces of future emissions, from demographic to technological and economic developments. The set of SRES emissions scenarios, none of which involve any future policies that explicitly address climate change, was based on an extensive assessment of the literature, six alternative modelling approaches and an "open process" that solicited wide participation and feedback from many groups and individuals.

The principal Australian involvement with this Special Report was through the government reviews of the draft text and participation in the formal adoption and approval process at Kathmandu.
