Cover: The combination of extremely low rainfall and record high temperatures across most of Australia in 2002 set the scene for devastating bushfires that struck areas of New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria in December 2002 and January 2003. The cover image was captured some weeks before the tragic fire storm that hit Canberra on 18 January 2003, with the camera pointing to the setting sun in the west from the northern Canberra suburb of Amaroo. It shows the oppressive atmosphere with extremely low humidity and the pervasive smoke from the fires in the nearby national parks.
