Observations and Engineering Branch

Networks and Measurements Section

The Networks and Measurements Section ensures that Bureau and national requirements for meteorological observations are satisfied by reviewing, developing and implementing meteorological observing systems, in collaboration with other Sections, Branches and Regional Offices in the Bureau, and by liaison with other organisations.

Amongst the functions performed by the Networks and Measurements Section are:
  • Formulate plans and policy for the development and operation of surface based observing networks and systems.
  • Monitor and review the efficiency and effectiveness of the surface-based component of the Observations Program.
  • Manage the marine observation networks, including buoys and voluntary ships.
  • Monitor the performance of observing networks and systems and recommend or implement improvements.
  • Prescribe procedures, performance standards and functional requirements for observations, instruments and equipment.
  • Evaluate new or modified observing systems.
  • Advise on long term re-equipment plans.
  • Prepare estimates and participate in budget and resource control for the Observations Program.
  • Exercise functional control of observing systems and inspection of observing stations through the Regional Directors and other branches.
  • Provide liaison between users of meteorological observations and suppliers of data and equipment.
  • Specify and review meteorological codes for the transmission on national and international communications systems.
  • Advise on technical training for all those involved in the surface-based observing network.
  • Provide Specialist advice on meteorological observations.
  • Represent the Bureau in matters related to surface-based meteorological observations.
  • Produce and maintain Observations Specification 2013.1 which details installation specifications for surface-based meteorological observations.
