The Space Based Observations Section is part of the Observations & Engineering Branch of the Bureau of Meteorology. Its role is to provide:

• Satellite observed data necessary for the operation of the Bureau of Meteorology's Output Programs;
• Satellite observed data for the Bureau's meteorological archive and real time data base systems;
• Coordinated national and international meteorological satellite activities; and
• Continuing maintenance of scientific and technical standards in satellite meteorology through a core of expertise.
