SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - FEBRUARY 1996

Summary Tropical Cyclones Thunderstorms Wind Flooding Temperature Rainfall

SUMMARY

Storms sank boats and caused significant flood damage in Tasmania early in the month. Other severe thunderstorms were reported in Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia, while severe gusts were recorded in Victoria. Tropical cyclones in Queensland and Western Australia caused no significant damage.

TROPICAL CYCLONES

Queensland

A low crossed Cape York from the Gulf of Carpentaria and deepened into Tropical Cyclone DENNIS on the 16th and then weakened.

Western Australia

Tropical Cyclone JACOB commenced as a low in the Gulf of Carpentaria during the 28th of January. The system tracked to the west across the Northern Territory then north-west towards the Kimberley coast. After moving offshore the low intensified to become a tropical cyclone on the 2nd. The Kimberley and Pilbara coastal areas received heavy rains as the cyclone then moved in a south-westerly direction. Notable daily rainfall totals were registered on the 3rd at Kuri Bay 225.2mm and on the 5th at Karratha 106.8mm, Mardie 86.1mm and Onslow 83.9mm. Tropical Cyclone JACOB did not re-cross the coast.

THUNDERSTORMS

Queensland

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and hail downed tree limbs on the 3rd in the Morton district. Severe storms formed in the Morton and south east corner of Port Curtis on the 9th.

New South Wales

Hail to 4.2cm was reported in the Central coast area, Williamtown (Hunter) and Springwood (Blue Mountains) on the 5th. Hail to 3cm was reported at Faulconbridge (Blue Mountains) which damaged a car and stripped trees. Hail 6cm in diameter was also reported at Stockton, Horsley Park 5cm, Inverell (Northern Tablelands) 4.2cm and Uralla (Northern Tablelands) 2cm. Mangrove Mountain recorded wind gusts to 111 km/h and at Cuttabri 129mm of rain was recored in 1 hour.

On the 6th Muswellbrook (Hunter) recorded gusts to 102 km/h and at Gloucester 22mm of rain fell in 10 minutes.

On the 8th Dubbo recorded gusts to 117 km/h. 100 homes were blown off stumps and roofs were blown off. One boy was seriously injured. At Goulburn gusts to 91 km/h were recorded, Mt Boyce (Central Tablelands) recorded 133 km/h and Mudgee (Central Tablelands) gusts to 96 km/h, Penrith (Metro) gusts to 98 km/h and at Blaxland 15mm of rain fell in 5 minutes.

At Woodford on the 27th 76mm of rain was recorded in 1 hour which caused soil erosion and road flooding.

On the 28th at Denham Court, gusts to 139 km/h were recorded. Trees snapped and large trees were uprooted. Sheds and fences were damaged or destroyed. A horse was killed by flying debris. At Oberon (Central Tablelands) hail to 2.2cm and 28mm of rain in 15 minutes were reported. At Pymble 22mm of rain fell in 15 minutes which caused flash flooding.

Tasmania

Eight vessels were sunk and two jetties damaged at the Northwest Bay Marina on the 9th/10th.

South Australia

Thunderstorms were reported in the Northeast Pastoral, Flinders and Mid North districts on the 22nd.

Western Australia

On the 7th golf ball-sized hail and 69mm of rain was recorded in one hour at Murrum (southwest of Mount Magnet) during thunderstorms. Vegetation was damaged by the wind gusts and localised flash flooding affected the area.

On the 18th, Cobra, northwest of Mount Augustus, recorded 31mm of rain in 30 minutes.

On the 25th and 28th winds from thunderstorms caused minor damage to vegetation and several buildings at Marble Bar.

Northern Territory

A severe thunderstorm with hail and lightning at Timber Creek caused tree damage and blew a roof off a shed. Wind gusts were estimated to 130 km/h.

WIND

Victoria

On the 9th gales and severe gusts occurred in Central and Western Victoria causing mainly trees damage. The highest gusts reported were 146 km/h at Wilsons Promontory, 109 km/h at Aireys Inlet, 98 km/h at Fawkner Beacon and 95 km/h at Cape Otway.

South Australia

Late on the 6th, squally northwest winds in the Port Lincoln and Louth Bay area caused some minor tree damage. A gust to 104 km/h was recorded at Port Lincoln Airport. Wind gusts to 102 km/h at Ceduna early on the 7th caused isolated minor tree damage.

On the 15th a dust devil was responsible for lifting and breaking dozens of roof tiles on a house in the Adelaide suburb of St Agnes. Gusty winds associated with thunderstorms on the 22nd blew down trees and unroofed a shed at Farina.

FLOODING

South Australia
Heavy rains near Merriton on the 22nd caused flash flooding, which damaged roads and washed away fencing. A total of 37mm was recorded in 45 minutes.

Tasmania
Flash flooding was reported in the South of the State on the 9th/10th. Damage is estimated to be 5 million dollars.
