SUMMARY

During the first week of May a rain event brought extensive falls to southeast Queensland which caused an estimated 100 million dollars damage and many rainfall records were broken. A tropical cyclone in Western Australia caused no significant damage.

TROPICAL CYCLONES

Western Australia

Tropical Cyclone JENNA commenced as a monsoonal low to the northwest of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands on the 1st. The system drifted on a southwesterly track and slowly intensified early the next day. During the 5th the system changed direction and continued to move towards the southeast crossing back into the West Australian area of responsibility. Tropical cyclone JENNA dissipated into a low late on the 6th. The cyclone did not cross the Australian coastline. Mean maximum wind were estimated to be 83 km/h.

Western Australia

An active cold front associated with a complex low produced strong, squally winds as the system crossed the west coast on the 8th. Some minor damage occurred in the Busselton and Perth metropolitan areas. Notable maximum wind gusts were recorded at Swanbourne 128 km/h and Rottnest Island 119 km/h. As a strong cold front crossed the west coast on the 31st isolated storms produced localised heavy rains and gusty winds. Minor damage was reported from parts of the lower west coastal area. Maximum wind gusts of 130 km/h were recorded at Cape Leeuwin and Swanbourne.
