SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - JUNE 2001

Summary Thunderstorms/Tornado Wind Bushfires Temperature Rainfall

SUMMARY

Many locations in Western Australia and New South Wales recorded their lowest monthly rainfall for June. By contrast a number of places in Central Australia reported their highest monthly rainfall for June on record. Large fires occurred in the Northern Territory.

THUNDERSTORMS/TORNADO

Queensland

A cloudband associated with a trough linked to a slow moving low near Adelaide affected the southern interior of the state from the 6th to the 9th. The blanket of cloud resulted in record high overnight minima in several centres and thunderstorms in the southwest produced moderate to heavy falls with some record daily rainfall totals.

New South Wales

On the 1st at Little Bay (Metropolitan) 72mm of rain fell in two hours which produced flash flooding and disrupted traffic.

WIND

Victoria

On the 7th severe gusts occurred in the Alpine district. Mt Hotham AWS recorded a gust of 120 km/h.

On the 8th severe gusts occurred in the Alpine district. Mt Hotham AWS recorded a gust of 90 km/h.

On the 20th severe localised winds caused damage to about 12 houses at Delacombe, near Ballarat.

Tasmania

Tasmania was buffeted by strong winds from the 22nd to the 27th. A gust was recorded at Maatsuyker Island of 172 km/h on the 26th.

On the 22nd in Hobart windows were blown out of office buildings and some roofs were removed.

On the 24th strong winds and lightning caused damage and power blackouts in various parts of the state.
A similar situation occurred the next day on the 25th.

BUSHFIRES

Northern Territory

Fresh, dry and gusty southeasterly winds and high fuel curing values and loads resulted in periods of very high to near extreme fire danger over the Top End during the third week of June and the last 2 days of the month. From the 25th of May until the 5th of June a wildfire burnt about 20,000 square kilometres of pastoral land and bush in the area around Daly Waters, south of Katherine. The fire burnt through ten stations and resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost pasture and much destruction of wildlife. The fire came within 30 kilometres of Daly Waters township. From the 22nd to the 24th 200 square kilometres of bush burnt in a wildfire at Litchfield National Park (Camp Creek, west of Adelaide River).

RAINFALL

New South Wales

The east coast of New South Wales experienced below average rainfall which was the result of high pressure domination over the continent.

South Australia

On the 6th a small rain band developed over the Mid North of the state and moved southwards, passing over the Adelaide suburbs in the late afternoon/early evening. Over 20mm of rain was recorded in 30 minutes at Kent Town and 24-27mm was recorded in 60 minutes over several inner suburbs. Minor flooding in the northern and southern suburbs were reported with significant flooding being reported from the Keswick Creek in the inner southern suburb of Unley. This rain event contributed to record June rainfalls at many inland locations.

Western Australia

Extremely dry conditions have been experienced through many parts of the South West Land Division since spring last year. This lack of rainfall has continued into early winter with most districts in the South West Land Division reporting record low rainfall totals for June. Agricultural districts were the worst affected areas with many farmers still waiting for significant rains. Lake Grace in the Great Southern district received 7.6mm, 4.8mm less than their previous record low rainfall for June and well below their average of 53mm. Pingelly, in the Central Wheat Belt, received less than half the amount of its previous low rainfall record, just 12.5mm. Record low rainfall was also experienced in parts of the Gascoyne with Paynes Find recording 1.8mm for June, more than 6mm below their previous record.
