SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - JUNE 1999

Introduction Wind/Tornadoes Thunderstorms Fog Temperature Rainfall

INTRODUCTION

Active cold fronts over the southwest of Western Australia produced strong winds and tornadoes. One of these later produced thunderstorms over southern parts of South Australia. Some locations in the Northern Territory reported highest monthly rainfall records for June.

WIND/TORNADOES

Queensland

The development of an intense low in the Tasman Sea caused strong to gale force winds across southeast Queensland during the 13th and 14th.

South Australia

A dust storm on Eyre Peninsula in the afternoon of the 12th was settled by rain later in the day as a rapidly moving front moved in from the west. The front with associated strong winds caused power blackouts across the central districts overnight of the 12th and 13th. A lightning strike disrupted telephone services to parts of the Adelaide Hills. Falling trees caused damage to powerlines and houses. Adelaide's maximum temperature for the 13th only reached 10.6oC the coldest June day since 1987.

Western Australia

On the 11th an active cold front produced strong winds near the lower west and southwest coasts. Cape Leeuwin registered gusts to 102 km/h and several other localities reported gusts to 80 km/h. In the Perth metropolitan area high winds in the early hours of the morning interrupted power supplies, removed tiles from roofs and blew trees onto several houses in suburban Mount Pleasant.

On the 17th a tornado cut a swathe of damage 50 to 80 metres wide that extended for approximately 6 kilometres in the Rockingham/Waikiki/Safety Bay area (60 kms south of Perth). Wind speeds were estimated to have reached 150 to 170 km/h. About 100 houses and a school were damaged by the tornado, of which several houses sustained severe structural damage.

On the 22nd a tornado struck Australind (north of Bunbury). About 12 houses were damaged along a 400 metre path that was 25-50 metres wide. The tornado travelled in a northwest to southeast direction and was associated with a convergence line ahead of a cold front.

THUNDERSTORMS

New South Wales

On the 21st at Mourbra (Metropolitan) 2cm hail was reported. The hail drifts lasted for five hours.

On the 22nd Noraville (Hunter) reported 2cm hail and 55mm of rain fell in 30 minutes.

Tasmania

Thunderstorms associated with the passage of a cold front through Bass Strait occurred in the north of the State causing some power blackouts on the 13th.

South Australia

On the 17th thunderstorms caused damage to properties south of Adelaide. The thunderstorms crossed the southern parts of the settled areas affecting Kangaroo Island, southern Mt. Lofty Ranges and Lower Southeast. Significant damage was caused to four houses and some shedding at Aldinga, a coastal community south of Adelaide, when a storm squall struck the area.

FOG

South Australia

A fog bank slowly extended across the Adelaide Plains during the morning of the 7th. Visibility was reduced to 100 metres at Adelaide Airport for most of the morning causing delays. Visibility was reduced to between 200 - 500 metres at other locations. The fog gradually cleared from the north later in the morning. The last time fog occurred in June was in 1995.

On the 26th a dense fog bank settled over the eastern half of the state. The fog spread south and east from Broken Hill, extending to the Murray mouth and across to Lameroo in the Murray Mallee. It was not until the afternoon of the 27th that the fog began to disperse.
