SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - AUGUST 1996 Severe winds continued into August with reports from New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. In South Australia an unusually cold airmass brought extensive snowfalls to parts of the State and a tornado was experienced early in the month. Persistent rainfall during late July and early August caused flooding in Victoria and Tasmania.
South Australia
New South Wales A low pressure system developed off the New South Wales coast during
the afternoon of the 30th. The low intensified and moved south. Gales
were reported from Norah Head to Wollongong. Wind gusts in excess of
93 km/h were recorded at Norah Head, Fort Denison, Sydney Airport and
Wollongong. Storm force winds were recorded at Bellambi Point near Wollongong
on the 31st. Victoria Severe wind gusts from the 1st to the 3rd were recorded in the Western, Central and Alpine districts. On the 1st, severe wind gusts to 107 km/h were recorded at Mt Buller. On the 2nd, a maximum wind gust of 115 km/h was recorded at Mt Buller
as well as 93 km/h gusts at Dunns Hill, Lookout Hill and Aireys Inlet.
Severe winds continued into the 3rd with gusts again reaching 115 km/hr
at Mt Buller. Many trees were damaged at Dunkeld (Western district)
by a storm. On the 11th severe wind gusts to 90 km/h were recorded at
Cape Otway. Tasmania Severe winds blew a bus shelter off its supports at Somerset during
the 2nd. Many rural localities lost power due to fallen branches and
lightning strikes. South Australia During the early morning of the 3rd, gale force northwest winds unroofed a house and several sheds and brought down many trees in the Strathalbyn area of the eastern Mt Lofty Ranges. Winds averaged 65-75 km/h with gusts to 100 km/h at Strathalbyn.
South Australia
Victoria A continuation of rainfall activity during the first week of August saw the renewal of flood warnings for a large number of Victorian catchments. Northern Victoria experienced the worst of the flooding with moderate events in the Goulburn, Ovens, Loddon and Avoca Basins. In southern Victoria, the moderate flooding in the Yarra Basin was the worst at Healesville since 1984 and in the lower Yarra since 1989. Tasmania Persistent rainfall during late July and early August caused moderate flooding along the South Esk river. Several buildings at the junction of the North and South Esk rivers were flooded. The road to the west of Queenstown was closed due to a landslip on the 4th.
