During the last month of winter, strong winds over the Northern Territory resulted in bushfires that damaged property. Storms in southeast Queensland on the 8th produced large hail, and lightning destroyed one house.
Northern Territory
Dry fresh and gusty east to northeast
winds produced a period of near extreme to
extreme fire danger over the northwestern Top
End (including Darwin) from the 25th to 27th.
Very high fire danger was also experienced in the
Darwin area, from the 22nd to the 24th and on the
28th and 29th . A fire in the Noonamah area (45
km's south of Darwin) on the 25th burnt out 39 sq
km of bushland and properties and caused $5000
damage to one house. Another fire on the 29th at
Bees Creek (about 40 km south of Darwin) burnt
out 250 ha of bushland and threatened 30
properties, including the Darwin Crocodile Farm
breeding pens. This fire also produced clouds of
toxic fumes as 6 semi-trailer freezer vans were
destroyed.
Queensland On the 8th near 2cm size hail was reported near Ipswich and the Gold Coast. On the same day a lightning bolt struck a brick and tile house near Nambour, blew a large hole in the roof, melted security screens and the resulting fire destroyed the home. Victoria On the 24th at Point Ricardo (East Gippsland) a severe thunderstorm produced a funnel cloud and water spout about 3 metres across and strong winds.
