SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - OCTOBER 1996

Summary Thunderstorms Wind Flooding Temperature Rainfall

SUMMARY

A complex low pressure system moving east from the Southern Ocean into Bass Strait in the middle of the month produced severe winds in South Australia and Victoria. Severe winds in Queensland at the end of the month caused damage to housing.

 

THUNDERSTORMS

Queensland

On the 30th golf ball size hail was reported from the Mudgeeraba area. On the 31st at least two houses were damaged at Monto by strong winds and hail.

New South Wales

Severe thunderstorms occurred on:

6th At Murrurundi (Hunter Valley) 62mm fell in 3 hours. At Gunnedah (Northwest slopes), 66mm fell in 2.5 hours.

28th At Eatonsville (Northern Rivers) 4.5cm hail broke windows, destroyed gardens and damaged cars.

30th At Brays Creek (Northern Rivers) 45mm fell in 30 minutes.

Victoria

On the 3rd dense hail up to 2cm in diameter was reported at Callaghan Creek in the Northeast district.

On the 11th gale force wind with gusts up to 107 km/h caused some roof damage at Bairnsdale. At Eskdale, gale force wind damaged a silo and a green house. At Chestnut 2cm hail was reported.

On the 12th gale force wind with gusts to 90 km/h were reported at Mallacoota.

Western Australia

Isolated thunderstorms produced some heavy rainfall in parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara during October. Kuri Bay and Wittenoom reported record totals for the month and Wyndham Post Office registered 84.8mm of rain on the 19th. The previous highest daily total recorded in the vicinity of Wyndham was 57.2mm at the Wyndham Port in 1944.

New South Wales

Severe thunderstorms occurred on:

WIND

Queensland

On the 19th wind damage to houses occurred in Redbank Plains including the unroofing of one house.

South Australia

Severe winds affected the Lower South East district on the 11th. Cape Jaffa recorded wind gusts of 93 km/h. No damage was reported from the area.

 

FLOODING

Victoria

In the period 28 September to 1 October a significant rainfall event with some totals in excess of 100mm affected all of Victoria. In Northern Victoria, this rainfall in conjunction with saturated catchment conditions and high reservoir storage levels resulted in moderate flooding for many rivers. The worst affected basin was the Ovens which experienced major flooding around Wangaratta and through all of the Buffalo River.
