SIGNIFICANT WEATHER - NOVEMBER 1997

Introduction Bushfires Tornadoes Wind Flooding Thunderstorms Temperature
Rainfall

INTRODUCTION

Significantly warmer than normal conditions over south eastern Australia lead to the outbreak of many serious bushfires, often as a result of lightning strikes. Tornadoes were observed in Queensland and Western Australia and thunderstorms produced some damage in each mainland state.

BUSHFIRES

Victoria

On the 26th, lightning strikes were the main cause of bushfires, particularly in the central and east of the state.

Tasmania

On the 22nd 60 bushfires were ablaze, no property damage was reported but 700 hectares of bushland was burnt.

South Australia

Lightning from scattered high based and almost dry thunderstorms, started numerous fires across southern South Australia on the 25th and 26th. Over 30 fires occurred on the Eyre Peninsula. Sheep and fencing were burnt near Elliston and fires in the Heggaton Conservation Park north of Cleve and the Coffin Bay National Park were still burning at the end of the month.

Western Australia

Numerous fires affected parts of the Pilbara and Kimberley during November and an estimated one million hectares of country was burnt.

TORNADOES

Queensland

On the 9th a tornado was sighted at Texas on the eastern Darling Downs.

Western Australia

On the 12th a tornado and hail to 4 cm in diameter developed near Balgair in the south east of the state. Minor flash flooding resulted as 17 mm of rain fell in 45 minutes.

On the 24th during the late afternoon, hail to 5.6 cm and averaging 2 cm occurred at Bamboo Creek in the Pilbara. Wind gusts were estimated to have reached 111 km/hr and five small tornadoes were observed along the gust front ahead of the storm. Local dust storms reduced the visibility to 1000 metres.

WIND

Queensland

On the 14th a deep low east of Cape Moreton caused strong winds to unroof a house on North Stradbroke Island.

Tasmania

Strong winds were experienced across the State on the 14th with some window damage and power disruptions in the north of the state.

On the 19th several properties in the Hobart area suffered roof damage. Power disruptions in the north and northwest of the state were caused by falling trees.

FLOODING

South Australia

The Wakefield River burst its banks near Port Wakefield on the 1st at 11am. This occurred after the early morning high tide and was clearly associated with the very heavy rainfall on the 30th and 31st of October over the catchment area.
