The Collection

The National Meteorological Library has access to a range of information resources through the Internet, other electronic resources and its own specialised collection of books, reports and journals. While most of the library's collection is 20th century material, some historical documents - particularly statistical climate data for Australia - date from the 1850's. The Library has been functioning since the creation of the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology in 1908.

In the Head Office Library the core of the collection is 500 journal titles in more than 50,000 bound volumes. The Library holds approximately 20,000 books and reports with around 1,500 being added annually. An increasing amount of material is available in electronic formats.

The Library collects material at a detailed research level in the subject areas of: atmosphere, climatology, precipitation, weather, drought, floods, cyclones, greenhouse, agrometeorology, satellite meteorology, forecasting and meteorological instruments. Mathematics, statistics, physics, computing, hydrology and oceanography titles are also acquired to support Bureau operations.
