History of Cobar Meteorological Office


  • The Cobar Meteorological Information Office commenced operations in June 1962. Prior to this, weather observations at Cobar were taken at the Post Office from 1882.
  • 1962 Station Opened and Routine Surface Observations Commenced plus Lightning Flash Counter and Pluviograph (Dines syphoning) for Rainfall Intensity
  • 1962 Radar installed (3MKVII )
  • 1968 Radar upgraded to WF2
  • 1969 Evaporation Pan (Class A) and Wind Run Anemometer (Munro) installed
  • 1972 Soil temperature measurements began at 10cm and 20cm depth
  • 1978 Sunshine Recorder (Type Campbell-Stokes) installed
  • 1997 Automatic Weather Station and Autosonde (automatic weather balloon launcher) installed
  • 1997 Removal of Radar (Type WF2)
  • 1999 Routine Upper Air Observations commenced
  • 1999 Routine Surface Observations Ceased/Replaced
  • 2001 Ceilometer (Vaisala CT25K) and Visibility Meter (Type Vaisala FD12) installed
  • 2001 rain gauges and Lightning Flash Counter relocated to AWS site.
  • 2002 Soil Thermometers, Evap pan and 2m cup anemometer moved to AWS site. Only sunshine recorder remains at old obs site.
  • 2004 50cm and 100cm Soil Thermometers Installed
  • 2005 New Building officially opened (May 19th)
