Minor to Major Flood Warning for the Murray and Edward Rivers

at Corowa, Torrumbarry, Barham, Wakool Junction, Boundary Bend, Euston, Mildura, Wentworth, Deniliquin, Stevens Weir and Moulamein

MAJOR FLOODING HIGHER THAN THE 1975 FLOOD OCCURRING AT WAKOOL JUNCTION, BOUNDARY BEND AND WENTWORTH

MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT MOULAMEIN

Rainfall over the past months has caused renewed and prolonged flooding along the Murray and Edward Rivers.

Along the Murray River, minor flooding is occurring at Corowa. The river level at Echuca and Moama fell below the minor flood level (93.50 metres AHD) on Monday 05 December. Moderate flooding is occurring at Torrumbarry. Major flooding is occurring at Barham.

Along the Edward River, moderate flooding continues at Deniliquin and Stevens Weir. Major flooding is occurring at Moulamein where the river level peaked at a record level of 6.23 metres on Thursday 01 December.

Further downstream along the Murray River, major flooding higher than the 1975 flood is occurring at Wakool Junction, Boundary Bend and Wentworth. Moderate flooding is occurring at Euston and Mildura. The river level at Euston may reach the major flood level (10.26 metres, 52.10 metres AHD) around 08-09 December. The river level at Mildura may reach 38.40 metres AHD around 15-17 December with moderate flooding. The river level at Wentworth may reach 34.20 metres around 18-20 December with major flooding.

Forecasts will be progressively refined once upstream flood peaks along the Murray River and its tributaries are observed.

Flood operations are being conducted by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) at Hume Dam and Lake Mulwala to manage inflows from the Upper Murray, Mitta Mitta River, Ovens River and other tributaries. MDBA are working closely with the Bureau and WaterNSW to plan release strategies.

Murray River downstream of Hume Dam to Tocumwal:

Minor flooding is occurring at Corowa.

The Murray River at Corowa is currently at 4.74 metres and falling, with minor flooding. The Murray River at Corowa may fall below the minor flood level (4.60 metres) during Thursday.

Murray River downstream of Tocumwal to Barham:

Major flooding is occurring at Barham. Moderate flooding is occurring at Torrumbarry. The river level at Echuca and Moama fell below the minor flood level on Monday.

The Murray River at Echuca and Moama is currently at 93.17 metres and falling, below the minor flood level.

The Murray River at Torrumbarry Weir fell below the major flood level (7.80 metres) on Saturday 03 December, and is currently at 7.75 metres and falling, with moderate flooding. The Murray River at Torrumbarry Weir may remain above the moderate flood level (7.60 metres) until late December.

The Murray River at Barham is currently at 6.11 metres and steady, with major flooding. The river level at Barham is likely to remain above the major flood level (6.10 metres) through to the weekend.

Murray River downstream of Barham to Wentworth:

Major flooding is occurring at Wakool Junction, Boundary Bend and Wentworth. Moderate flooding is occurring at Euston and Mildura.

Renewed river rises have been observed along the Murray River at Wakool Junction, where the river level reached 11.72 metres on Monday 05 December, with major flooding. A prolonged peak is possible at Wakool Junction where the river level may remain around 11.70 metres through to mid December, with major flooding.

The Murray River at Boundary Bend may remain near 9.20 metres through to 10-12 December, with major flooding. A prolonged peak is possible with the river level remaining above the major flood level (9.00 metres) until late December.

The Murray River at Euston may reach 10.26 metres (52.10 metres AHD) around 08-09 December, with major flooding. A prolonged peak is possible through to late December, with moderate flooding.

The Murray River at Mildura Weir may reach around 38.40 metres AHD around 15-17 December, with moderate flooding. A prolonged peak is possible through to late December, with moderate flooding.

The Murray River at Wentworth may reach 34.20 metres AHD around 18-20 December, with major flooding. A prolonged peak is possible through to early January, with major flooding.

Edward River:

Moderate flooding is occurring at Deniliquin and Stevens Weir. Major flooding is occurring at Moulamein.

The Edward River at Deniliquin is currently at 7.40 metres and falling, with moderate flooding. The Edward River at Deniliquin may fall below the moderate flood level (7.20 metres) during Thursday. The river level may fall below the minor flood level (4.60 metres) around mid December.

The Edward River at Stevens Weir Downstream is currently at 6.37 metres and falling, with moderate flooding. The Edward River at Stevens Weir Downstream may remain above the moderate flood level (5.80 metres) through late December.

The Edward River at Moulamein peaked around 6.23 metres Thursday evening 01 December with record major flooding, and is currently at 6.18 metres and falling, with major flooding. The Edward River at Moulamein may remain above the major flood level (6.10 m) through to mid week next week.

  • * Prevent damage to your vehicle. Move it under cover, away from areas likely to flood.
  • * Avoid being swept away. Stay out of fast-flowing creeks and storm drains.
  • * Never drive, ride or walk through flood water. Flood water can be DECEPTIVE and dangerous.
