Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Snowy Mountains forecast district

ALPINE GALES

Weather Situation

Gale-force northwesterly winds are expected to persist about Alpine peaks until later this evening as a cold front approaches from the southwest.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging around 85 km/h with gusts to 125 km/h are forecast for Alpine parts of the Snowy Mountains forecast district above 1900 metres. Winds are expected to ease later this evening.

Winds averaging 90km/h at times with gusts to about 125 km/h were recorded at Thredbo top station early this afternoon.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Saturday.
