The international marine science community operates a large number of web sites that provide access to marine data and data products. Many of these operate through intergovernmental process such as via UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and others operate as parts of scientific programs and experiments.

International Oceanographic Data Sources

Ocean Portal

IOC’s program on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE), provides an extensive source of marine data and information related web sites.

IODE

The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) program web site contains links to a range of material, including links to the various National Oceanographic Data Centres around the world.

National Oceanographic Data Centres

Almost 70 countries operate National Oceanographic Data Centres in support of national and international interests. Many of these are on-line and can supply oceanographic data.

NODC - USA

United States of America National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) holds much of the worlds available oceanographic data and a large quantity of this is available on-line.

GCMD

NASA has developed a data directory system called the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) aimed at supporting researchers investigating global change. This ‘meta data’ system provides reference to a wide range of data sets covering most physical scientific disciplines.

Sources of Regional Data

AODC

The Australian Oceanographic Data Centre operates as the national oceanographic data centre for Australia and holds a range of physical oceanographic data sets.

CSIRO Marine Laboratories

CSIRO conducts research into the sustainable use of Australia’s marine resources, the role of the ocean in climate and ecosystem conservation. They have some data available on-line.

JODC

The Japanese Government operates a national oceanographic data centre, the Japan Oceanographic Data Centre, that also provides a regional service, supporting the data management needs of the western pacific. JODC has extensive holdings of global and regional marine data sets.

TAO

The Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) Project is a US based project run by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory of NOAA that collects real-time data from moored ocean buoys to assist with the detection, understanding and prediction of El Nino and La Nina. Some data and products are available from this web site.

Training and Related Sites

Many programs and projects provide support for scientists through the provision of tools and training facilities via the web.

MEDI

The IODE program has developed the Marine Environmental Data Inventory software to support the creation, management and retrieval of metadata describing marine data sets.

Ocean Teacher

Ocean Teacher is an extensive package providing both training and specific resources for the management of marine data and the generation of information.
