For people in the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and parts of the South Coast, Central Tablelands, South West Slopes and Australian Capital Territory Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:11 pm Friday, 21 October 2016.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Bowral, Braidwood, Nowra, Young, Yass, Goulburn and Canberra.

Severe thunderstorms may also produce destructive winds over the South West Slopes and Southern Tablelands. Locations which may be affected include Young, Yass and Goulburn.

Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Upper Western and Northern Tablelands districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

Extensive damage was reported at Parkes earlier this evening with 2-3cm hail and possible tornado damage.
4cm hail was reported at Young.
94 km/h gust at Trangie at 5:17pm.
89 km/h gust at Bourke at 3:39pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 1:15 am Saturday.

If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas or Canberra and Queanbeyan, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in these areas.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at or call 1300 659 218. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
