128 km Dampier Radar Loop

The Bureau's radar at Dampier on the Pilbara coast suffered significant damage as severe Tropical Cyclone Damien passed over the area on Saturday 8th February. Due to the severity of the damage, the Dampier radar will need to be fully replaced. This is a significant project and unfortunately means the radar will be offline for a lengthy period of time. The Bureau knows how important this project will be to the Dampier community and is currently assessing timelines for when a new radar can be operational. The community can still access the Port Hedland radar, which features considerable overlapping coverage of the Dampier radar's eastern region, and the Bureau will continue to issue accurate, timely and reliable forecasts to local communities.  The Bureau does not rely on any one system and uses a broad network of data sources, infrastructure, computer modelling and meteorological knowledge to generate its forecasts and warnings.
