Coastal Waters Forecast for Victoria

Issued at 5:10 am EDT on Saturday 21 November 2009
for the period until midnight EDT Tuesday 24 November 2009.

Weather Situation

A low pressure system is expected to approach the northwest of Victoria later Saturday then pass over the State early Sunday then through eastern Bass Strait by Sunday afternoon to reach the southern Tasman Sea by Sunday night. A high pressure ridge will extend from the Bight over Victoria later Sunday and Monday.

West Coast: SA-VIC Border to Cape Otway

Forecast for Saturday until midnight

Winds: Variable 5 to 15 knots. Seas: Up to 1 metre. Swell: Southwesterly about 1.5 metres. The chance of thunderstorms this morning.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: South to southeasterly 5 to 15 knots, increasing to 15 to 25 knots around dawn and possibly 30 knots in the east then tending southwesterly at similar strength by early afternoon. Wind easing to 10 to 20 knots in the evening and tending westerly. Seas: Below 1 metre increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the morning then abating to 1.5 metres at night. Swell: Southwesterly 1.5 metres.

Forecast for Monday

Winds: Westerly 20 to 30 knots decreasing to 15 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: Up to 4 metres decreasing to 3 metres during the afternoon. Swell: Southwesterly 2 metres increasing to 3 to 4 metres from midday.

Central Coast: Cape Otway to Wilsons Promontory

Forecast for Saturday until midnight

Winds: Variable 5 to 15 knots. Seas: Up to 1 metre. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre. The chance of thunderstorms this morning.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: Southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending south to southwesterly and strengthening to 20 to 30 knots during the morning then easing to 15 to 20 knots during the evening and tending southwest to westerly. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres increasing to 2 to 3 metres during the morning. Swell: Southwesterly 1 metre.

Forecast for Monday

Winds: Westerly 20 to 30 knots. Seas: 2 to 3 metres increasing to 4 metres during the morning. Swell: Southwesterly 1 to 2 metres increasing to 3 metres from midday.

Central Gippsland Coast: Wilsons Promontory to Lakes Entrance

Forecast for Saturday until midnight

Winds: Variable 5 to 15 knots tending east to northeasterly during the evening. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres. Swell: Easterly 1 metre. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 metres.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: East to southeasterly 10 to 20 knots tending southwesterly up to 30 knots during the morning then tending west to southwesterly 25 to 35 knots around midday before easing to 15 to 25 knots at night. Seas: 1 to 2 metres, increasing to 3 to 4 metres by afternoon. Swell: Easterly 1 metre. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 metres.

Winds: West to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots. Seas: Up to 4 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 to 2 metres. Swell: Southeasterly about 1 metre.

East Gippsland Coast: Lakes Entrance to 60nm east of Gabo Island

Winds: Variable 5 to 15 knots tending northeasterly during the evening. Seas: Up to 1.5 metres. Swell: Northeasterly 1.5 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 metres.

Forecast for Sunday

Winds: East to northeasterly increasing to 15 to 20 knots around dawn then tending north to northwesterly up to 30 knots during the morning then tending west to southwesterly 25 to 35 knots around midday then easing to 15 to 25 knots in the evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres increasing to 3 to 5 metres. Swell: Easterly about 1.5 metres. Swell: Southwesterly 0.5 metres.
