TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for DAMAGING WIND and LARGE HAILSTONES
For people in parts of the
Northern Country and
North East Forecast Districts.
Issued at 4:03 pm Thursday, 5 December 2013.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours in parts of the East Gippsland district. Locations which may be affected include Orbost, Buchan, Combienbar and Gelantipy.
Yarrawonga doppler radar has identified strong low level winds with the potential for damaging wind gusts reaching the surface associated with thunderstorms. Locations which may be affected include Shepparton, Yarrawonga, Wodonga and Wangaratta.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the West and South Gippsland district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home.
* stay indoors if possible.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
* listen to the radio for storm updates
* switch off your computer and electrical appliances
The next warning is due to be issued by 7:05 pm.
