Forecast issued at 4:33 pm EST on Saturday 15 December 2018.

Weather Situation

Ex-tropical cyclone Owen is located over the tropical interior and is expected to move southeastwards during the next few days with the low likely to move off the northeast coast tropical coast on Sunday. Uncertainty increases from Monday regarding the movement of the system, with the low possibly continuing to move southeast along the southern tropical and central coasts and then back north again from Tuesday. Near the low heavy falls and damaging wind gusts will be possible for the next few days. Elsewhere deep tropical moisture is likely to remain in place to the east of a surface trough moving slowly eastwards across eastern parts over the coming days, likely combining with a significant upper trough over eastern Australia to lead to showers, rain areas and thunderstorms over much of northern and eastern Queensland. Severe thunderstorms with heavy falls will be possible in parts of eastern Queensland. A surface trough near Fraser Island may deepen during Sunday also enhancing showers and rain areas about the southeast, in particular about the Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast.
