Issued at 3:54 pm EST on Tuesday 7 December 2021

Flood Warning Number: 31

MAJOR FLOODING PEAK EXPECTED AT MOURA ON WEDNESDAY

The flood peak is currently approaching Woodleigh. River level rises are continuing downstream of Theodore.

Rainfall totals up to 50-80mm, with isolated higher totals up to 120mm, have been recorded in the 24h to 9am Tuesday over the Dawson, Comet and upper Nogoa catchment areas.

Totals up to 35mm have been recorded in the Nogoa since 9am Tuesday.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely from Tuesday onwards, which may cause renewed river level rises and areas of renewed flooding from mid-week.

Dawson River to Theodore:

The flood peak is currently downstream of Theodore. Minor to moderate flood levels continue upstream. Further rises are possible later in the week with forecast rain.

No recent observations at Taroom are available. The river level was 4.46 metres and steady, below the minor flood level of 4.50 metres, at 2:00am Tuesday morning. The Dawson River at Taroom is likely to remain below the minor flood level (4.50 m) during Tuesday. Small renewed rises are possible with storms but further flooding is not expected at this stage.

The Dawson River at Theodore peaked at 12.24 metres around 01:00 am Tuesday 07 December and is currently at 12.13 metres and falling. The Dawson River at Theodore is likely to fall below the major flood level (12.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday and is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (11.00 m) during Wednesday.

Dawson River downstream of Theodore:

Major flooding is occurring along the Dawson River downstream of Theodore, with the flood peak approaching Woodleigh.

The Dawson River at Moura is currently at 11.30 metres and rising, with moderate flooding. The Dawson River at Moura is likely to peak between 11.30 and 11.60 metres early Wednesday.

There are currently no observations for the Baralaba manual station, however based on the nearby automatic station downstream of the weir, it is expected that levels at the manual station are above the major flood level (9.00 m) and the Dawson River Bridge and rising. The Dawson River at Baralaba is expected to remain above the major flood level (9.00 m) for the rest of the week as further floodwater arrives from upstream. A peak prediction will be provided once upstream peaks are observed.
