Major Flood Warning for the Georgina River and Eyre Creek

MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT BEDOURIE AND LIKELY AT GLENGYLE FROM EARLY NEXT WEEK

MAJOR FLOODING IS EASING SLOWLY ALONG THE GEORGINA RIVER AT MARION DOWNS

The main flood peak is approaching Bedourie where major flooding is occurring. Floodwaters from past few weeks downstream of Bedourie are keeping river levels elevated at Glengyle. Combined flood peaks from Bedourie and Cluny is likely to cause major flooding at Glengyle from early next week.

Prolonged flooding may cause road closures and isolation of communities over the next few weeks.

No significant rainfall totals have been observed across the catchment over the last week and no significant rainfall is forecast for the next few days.

Georgina River to Marion Downs:

Major flooding is easing along the Georgina River to Marion Downs. Moderate flooding continues to ease at Roxborough Downs and Glenormiston.

The Georgina River at Marion Downs was around 5.80 metres on Saturday at 09:00 am and falling slowly with major flooding. The river level at Marion Downs remains well above the approaches of the Bridge (3.50 metres). The Georgina River at Marion Downs is expected to remain above the major flood level (5.00 metres) over the weekend and into early next week.

Georgina River downstream of Marion Downs:

Significant flooding is occurring along the Georgina River downstream of Marion Downs. Major flooding is occurring along the King Creek, from Marion Downs to Cluny. The King Creek at Cluny was around 5.38 metres at 09:00 am on Saturday and falling slowly with major flooding.

Eyre Creek:

Major flooding is possible along Eyre Creek. Prolonged flooding and isolation of communities and properties is expected over the next few weeks.

Eyre Creek at Bedourie is currently at 5.63 metres and rising slowly with major flooding. Water level is above the bridge level (4.40 metres). The Eyre Creek at Bedourie is likely to remain above the major flood level (5.00 m) over the weekend and into next week, as the flood peak travel from downstream of Marion Downs.

Combined floodwaters from Bedourie and Cluny is likely to cause elevated river and creek levels and significant flooding to Glengyle. Eyre Creek at Glengyle was around 3.50 metres at 09:00 am on Wednesday with moderate flooding. The water level is expected to be above the bridge level (3.30 metres) and rising slowly. Glengyle is expected to continue rising slowly over the weekend and likely to exceed the major flood level (4.00 metres) early next week. A peak forecast will be provided as upstream peaks are observed. Creek levels are likely to remain elevated for the next few weeks.
